Originally from Asia, this tree with grey-brown bark has very small, dark green leaves and flowers in small clusters at the ends of the branches. The fruit is an ovoid cone (4 cm) that is green then brown when ripe, with embracing scales. These tall, pyramidal, evergreen trees were dedicated to Pluto, God of the empire of the dead, which explains their frequent presence in cemeteries.
