Grape seed extract is a rich bioflavonoid that is used to fight free radicals and maintain capillary health. It is very similar to pine bark extract, with a high content of proanthocyanidins. Free radicals damage capillaries in two ways: 1) by inactivating a compound called 1-antitrypsin, whose role is to restrict enzymes that degrade collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid; and 2) by causing fats in cell membranes to go rancid (lipid peroxidation).
The proanthocyanidins found in grape seeds are known for their anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic, and antiallergic actions; for preventing skin aging; for destroying oxygen free radicals; and for inhibiting the harmful effects of the sun's UV rays. They also have links to collagen, the most abundant protein in the body and a key component of skin, gums, bones, teeth, hair, and body tissues.
Proanthocyanidins have been indicated for poor microcirculatory blood flow distribution in the brain and heart; capillary fragility and altered permeability (in diabetes mellitus); chronic arterial or venous insufficiency in the extremities; altered platelet aggregation and other characteristics of blood circulation in capillaries; rupture of elastic fibers of capillaries (collagen and elastin) due to the action of free radicals and enzymes; retinal microangiopathy, lymph node edema, varicose veins and other symptoms of the problems listed above; as well as the cumulative effects of aging and the reduction of the risk of degenerative diseases.
