Three Ways to Boost Your Overall Well-Being
Lately, immunity has been a topic on everyone’s minds. While it’s absolutely important to support our bodies’ immune system from the inside out, it’s also an important time to be thinking about our overall wellbeing. The roots of “wellness” trace back to ancient India, China, Greece, and Rome. But today, wellness has gone mainstream, with many of us trying meditation, dry brushing, and yoga.
But what is wellness? The wellness paradigm invites us to not just feel good, but to flourish, by taking a holistic approach to our health. In other words, it’s not just about supporting our physical health, but our mental and emotional well-being too.
Find Balance
Physical health is one of the most important pillars of wellness – when we feel good, we can do good! There’s a place for all foods, but a great place to start is by making sure we’re covering all our nutritional bases, which includes enough high-quality protein, and supporting our overall nutrition and gut health by making sure we’re eating a wide variety of nourishing plant foods (in as many colors as possible!).
While we need to find that balance of work and play, it’s also important to find that balance in our body’s biochemistry. Evidence suggests that humans evolved eating omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a ratio of approximately 1 to 1. But our modern diet provides us with more omega-6 than we need – and the typical Western diet now provides us with an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of approximately 16 to 1! Correcting this fatty acid imbalance can have beneficial effects on our cardiovascular system, cognitive function, and mood!
In one study, researchers followed a sample group for seven years and made an astonishing discovery about EPA, one of the fatty acids found in fish oils: those with higher blood levels of EPA exhibited better mental resiliency over time. Resiliency is generally defined as the ability to “bounce back” from difficult life events.
This inspired Genuine Health to create omega3+ joy, a high potency omega-3 fish oil with a clinically proven dose of EPA to improve mood. Just two softgels daily deliver 2,000mg of an EPA concentrate that has been shown to improve mood and outlook.
Move and Rest
Nutrition is very important for our overall wellbeing, but so is exercise and sleep! Movement helps keep our bodies healthy from head to toe. More important than finding the “perfect” exercise is finding a movement that you enjoy doing daily.
When it comes to recovery, rest and good nutrition is important. But instead of only thinking about nutrition for fueling your muscles (though that’s important!), think about the connective tissue that supports your muscles (as well as skin and joints). A sustainably sourced and highly absorbable collagen like Genuine Health’s clean collagen can help you feel good in your skin and joints! clean collagen helps support healthy connective tissue, which is the second most abundant tissue in the body. Collagen also helps alleviate joint discomfort by stimulating cell repair and promoting the growth of new joint cartilage. Plus, a recent study found that participants taking collagen reported more energy and better overall wellbeing!
Do Good
Fostering connections is very important for our overall mental and emotional wellbeing. While the last several months have made it harder to meet with others in real life, we’ve found amazing ways to connect virtually. As the weather cools, and we brace for more time indoors, it’s very important to maintain these connections and find projects and activities to keep us engaged.
Finally, when we are well, we are better equipped to share the love and help others, by lending a hand to those who need our help and being active in our communities. In recent years, the word “wellness” has come to conjure up connotations of “me, me, me,” but if the last several months have taught us anything, it’s that we’re all in this together.
