Qu’est-ce que le D-mannose?

D-mannose is a simple sugar naturally found in certain plants, including cranberries, blueberries, peaches, and apples. D-mannose exists in two forms, alpha and beta. The alpha form is sweet, while the beta form is bitter. Natural manufacturing methods for D-mannose result in a blend of these two forms: a slightly sweet product with a mild bitter aftertaste.

Although small amounts of D-mannose are metabolized by the human body, most of it is rapidly excreted in the urine. Limited in vitro research has shown that, in the bladder, D-mannose can adhere to unwanted foreign substances, including E. Coli, which are the most common cause of UTIs, preventing them from sticking to the bladder walls. D-mannose helps maintain healthy mucosal surfaces in the bladder and promotes normal elimination. Consequently, many people have used D-mannose to treat urinary tract infections and improve their genitourinary health. D-mannose is a simple sugar molecule, pleasant-tasting, slightly sweet, closely related to glucose. But D-mannose is not easily metabolized by the body. Because the body uses tiny amounts of D-mannose, it does not harm blood sugar regulation, making it an alternative to sugar-filled solutions, such as cranberry juice, for treating UTIs. Diabetics should continue to monitor their blood sugar and watch for potential fluctuations, as each person responds differently.

Research on D-mannose

Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of D-mannose. A 2013 study evaluated D-mannose in 308 women who frequently had UTIs. D-mannose was almost as effective as the antibiotic nitrofurantoin in preventing UTIs over a 6-month period. In a 2014 study, it was compared to the antibiotic trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for treating and preventing frequent UTIs in 60 women. D-mannose reduced UTI symptoms in women with an active infection. It was also more effective than the antibiotic in preventing further infections. A third study in 2016 tested the effects of D-mannose in 43 women with an active UTI. At the end of the study, most women showed a decrease in their symptoms.

It should be noted that D-Mannose does not possess antibiotic properties and cannot eliminate existing infections. If you experience persistent symptoms such as a burning sensation during urination and/or urgency to urinate, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional to determine if these symptoms are caused by a urinary tract infection.

How to use D-Mannose

D-mannose can come in various forms – as a powder that can be mixed with water or fruit juice, or as a supplement, particularly in capsules. In some cases, it will be mixed with concentrated cranberry powder for a synergistic effect. For preventative use, the recommended dosage is 2 grams (2,000 mg) to be taken once daily. Since D-mannose is a simple sugar, it is not necessary to take it with a meal. It is best to take it with water to reduce the sugar load, but it can also be mixed with juice. It is generally recommended to drink 1 to 2 cups of liquid to increase fluid intake to help regularly flush the urinary system. If you have a UTI or suspect you have one, it is recommended to increase the dosage by 1.5 times (3 grams) per day, ideally taking 1.5 grams twice daily for 14 days or 1 gram three times daily for 14 days. It is best to consume it immediately after mixing for the best results. Having pills at home and/or at work or on your person can ensure you don't miss a dose if mixing the product is inconvenient. Make sure to drink plenty of water if you are using the pill form to help flush your bladder and kidneys. Most people do not experience any side effects, but some may have diarrhea or loose stools. Safe use during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully demonstrated. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional before use. Note that D-mannose can be safely used with other recommended natural products, including vitamin C and probiotics. Pure D-Mannose from NOW® has a caloric value of four calories per gram, similar to other sugars. Therefore, a two-gram teaspoon serving provides only 8 calories.
