Eat for cold weather
The weather may be cold, but there are ways to adjust your diet to warm up from the inside out. Try adding the following foods and spices to your diet to get through winter!
1. SPICE UP YOUR LIFE!
Tap into the power of spices to warm you up from the inside. Here are some of our favourite spices to add to your food:
- Cinnamon and nutmeg: Two very versatile spices that can be used to add flavour to your morning oatmeal, or (for a savoury meal) to your sweet potatoes in the evening.
- Cayenne: Cayenne can warm you and your meal. Be careful, cayenne can be very spicy. Start by using a little and add more if you wish.
- Ginger: Fresh or powdered ginger adds flavour to any dish, whether sweet or savoury.
2. DON'T SAY GOODBYE TO SMOOTHIES
Smoothies are a great way to include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet, and they don't have to be just a summer treat! Add warm spices and seasonal vegetables to awaken your taste buds and prepare you for cold weather.
How to prepare a warming smoothie:
- Say goodbye to ice: Ice can make you feel cold, so don't add it to your autumn and winter smoothies.
- Add a little cinnamon: Cinnamon is a warming spice that can help warm you from the inside.
- Include autumn and winter foods: Pumpkin is a great addition to a smoothie. Add a little cinnamon too and you'll love it. We also like the sweet minty flavour of the following peppermint smoothie for the holidays:
Peppermint Smoothie
Ingredients
1 cup almond milk
6 large fresh mint leaves
1 frozen banana
1 serving of Vega One® French Vanilla All-in-One Shake
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a blender and enjoy!
3. WARM FOOD IS LIKE A WARM BLANKET
There's nothing more comforting than a hot plate of food when it's cold outside. Here are some comforting meal ideas for autumn:
- Chili: Chili makes you feel the opposite of what its name suggests. Prepare chili using the warming spices listed above and enjoy a pleasant and well-being feeling away from the cold.
- Soups: Soup is a source of warmth and comfort, and a great way to include some of these amazing autumn and winter vegetables in your day.
- Pies: Can a dessert make you feel warm and comforted? Absolutely! There's nothing better than a freshly baked apple pie full of warming spices.
4. DON'T FORGET TO HYDRATE
You may feel less thirsty when it's cold outside. Therefore, drinking less water is a common mistake people tend to make when the seasons change. Hydration is always very important; especially if you exercise.
- Room temperature water: Drinking ice water when you're already shivering from the cold outside is not very tempting. Drink your water at room temperature to stay well hydrated.
- Herbal teas: It's always nice to wrap your hands around a warm cup of tea, and herbal teas can be a delicious option.
- Festive seasonal drinks: Hot apple cider, chai tea, hot water with ginger and lemon are tasty drinks that will warm you from the inside out.
