Flora: from seed to bottle
From the initial raw ingredients to the finished products, you can be assured that Flora products truly nourish body and soul.
Flora’s Commitment to Quality Products and the Environment
Since 1965, Flora has been offering Canadians the best in health supplements and natural foods. Owned and operated by Thomas Greither, a third-generation health entrepreneur, you could say that this commitment to superior quality products and environmental protection is deeply ingrained in Flora's veins. The company doesn't just talk about quality or environmental concern; it actively demonstrates it by integrating high standards from raw material selection through production to the finished product.
Eco-Friendly Packaging and Innovations
Flora uses biodegradable packaging materials and tea bags, and prints on tree-free paper made from sugarcane waste and wheat straw instead of trees. Flora's famous amber glass bottles with metal lids are fully recyclable and help ensure that the product inside is not contaminated by plasticizers.
While Flora continuously keeps environmental impact at the forefront of its manufacturing processes, its latest research has led it to invest in a new packaging machine. This allows the company to offer products like probiotics in blister packaging, which has an even smaller carbon footprint than their glass bottles. These packages are lighter, use less overall material, take up less space, and consume much less energy to produce and transport.
Ecologically Sustainable Ingredients
Flora products also reflect their commitment to sustainability and the environment. Flor·Essence® is a herbal detoxifier prepared using herbs grown on organic farms, and Udo’s Oil® is a sustainable omega-3-6-9 formula made entirely from organic seed oils, rather than fish. For several decades, Flora has been producing organic flax oil by sourcing seeds from Canadian farms in Saskatchewan and maintaining a long-standing partnership and deep ties with farmers.
Whenever possible, Flora sources certified organic ingredients, only purchases non-GMO raw materials, and sustainably sources specific ingredients, including palm oil, coconut oil, and Manuka honey. The use of organic ingredients means supporting agricultural practices that use natural pest control methods, as well as the health of the soil and immediate environment. Research shows that organic herbs, fruits, and vegetables are often richer in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and flavonoid antioxidants. Flora was also the first company to use algae-sourced omega-3 products, such as our vegetarian DHA product made from algae and Omega Brain+. Algae-based DHA and EPA omega-3 products are sustainable, do not deplete fish stocks, and do not raise concerns about ocean pollution and contaminants.
In addition to sourcing organic and non-GMO ingredients, Flora ensures that its formulas include the following quality elements:
- vegetarian-sourced raw materials
- therapeutic quantities of active ingredients
- few or no excipients
- traditional alcohol/water extraction methods, if possible
- vegetable capsules for its dry powders and dry herbal extracts
This commitment does not stop with their own products but also extends to Flora’s partner brands. The Floradix® iron and herbal formula has been on the market for over 75 years, and Flora proudly distributes it in North America on behalf of Salus Haus, the German manufacturer. Salus Haus has long championed and launched a wide variety of environmental and sustainable initiatives and has won several awards for its efforts in Europe. These include the use of electric vehicles, hydroelectric power, land conservation for "biotopes," and the maintenance of orchards and organic farms. Salus is also part of the "Climate Protection and Energy Efficiency Group of the German Economy," which is committed to targets focused on energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.
Salus Haus and Flora are family-owned businesses truly committed to demonstrating to the world that environmental respect can go hand in hand with innovation and economic growth. Flora aims to remain a leader in the natural health products field by staying true to its commitment to its mandate of offering only superior quality products that have a positive impact on people's lives. From initial raw ingredients to finished products, you can be assured that Flora products truly nourish the body and soul.
